Course Overview

TOEFL is an American standard English assessment test. Organized by Princeton based private Non-profit ETS, there are as many as 2.3 million registered exam takers each year. There are equally thousands of TOEFL accredited exam centres worldwide. The TOEFL exam comes in three levels.

Course Objectives

TOEFL Primary 8+

Has listening, speaking, and reading parts. It is used as a continuous placement and diagnostic test. Students taking this test may speak English as a second language and helps ascertain the needed standard proficiency in each curriculum. It may also be applicable to bilingual children who intend to move abroad or already have. The TOEFL primary test level is aggregated as follows:

TOEFL Primary Reading and Listening Test — Step 1 – 30 minutes for each section.
TOEFL Primary Reading and Listening Test — Step 2 – 30 minutes for each section.
TOEFL Primary Speaking Test – 20 minutes in total with a focus on descriptions.

TOEFL Junior 11+

There are two test formats as follows:

TOEFL Junior Standard Test
Listening Comprehension – Scale of 200-300 – 40 minutes test time.
Language Form and Meaning – Scale of 200-300 – 25 minutes duration in test time.
Reading Comprehension – Scale of 200-300 – 50 minutes test time.
Total of 600-900 scale with a duration of 1 hour 25 minutes.
TOEFL Junior Speaking Test
Has a score range of 0-16 and a test time duration of 18 minutes in total.
The objective of TOEFL Junior is to gauge student proficiency on a MetaMetrics® Lexile® measures scale which helps in choosing appropriate study materials and curriculum.

Topics

There are four parts to the TOEFL test.

Reading – Test takers would answer 10 questions from 3 – 4 passages each. The duration of the test would be 54 – 72 minutes in total.
Listening – 10 questions each from 3 – 4 lectures and 2 – 3 conversations. It has a duration of 41-57 minutes.
Speaking – There are 4 speaking tasks derived from both listening and reading exam materials. There is a duration of 17 minutes in total.
Writing – It comes with 2 different tasks reading and listening, with test takers required to input relevant answers.

TOEFL questions are derived from a wide range of topics, including arts, technology, anthropology, history, economics, work, school, and everyday life. Candidates are expected to have the knowledge, good analysis, and reasoning to answer in all 4 parts of the TOEFL exam.
